The majority of ice maker utilize the sweeping comb design. Once the mold drops to 16F, the motor and heater engage; slightly thawed cubes are swept from the mold into the storage bin. See the Icemaker Manual for more details of this sequence and cycling this style. By far the most common, and reliable design is the Whirlpool Modular Icemaker.
Whirlpool Modular Icemaker
GE is the next most popular ice maker; its logic is identical to Whirlpool but they do not interchange. To cycle the one following it is necessary to quickly operate the bin check arm 4 times. Subsequent designs have visible test switches. Many other designs also have test buttons. These are quite handy during diagnosis.
GE IM6 Icemaker
Next most popular is the Electrolux design which is very similar in shape and mounting to the Whirlpool Modular but for different wiring. It is far easier to buy the correct (and cheap one) than attempt to rewire the plug.
Electrolux Frigidaire Icemaker
Both LG and Samsung ice makers are a throw back to the old plastic trays that Grand Ma used to use. The mold motor twists the mold and snaps out the cubes into the bin.
